St Michael & All Angels

The Bishop of Manchester visited St Michael & All Angels with St Catherine, Barton with Peel Green on November 17 2006. The visit was part of his ongoing pilgrimage to every parish in the Manchester Diocese.

As part of the Parish visit element of the pilgrimage Bishop Nigel paid a poignant visit to St Catherine's Cemetery. There he was able to pay his respects at the grave of Marshall Stevens who built the Manchester Ship Canal. St Catherine's cemetery is also home to the Manchester Ship Canal Mausoleum which commemorates all who lost their lives in the building of the canal.

The next stop was a visit to All Saints Franciscan Friary. Priest in Charge at St Michael's Revd Bruce Lamb explained: "Right next door to St Anne's cemetery is a Roman Catholic friary and I took the Bishop to meet the brothers who live there. They entertained him lavishly!"

Next Bishop Nigel attended a special Community Reception which was hosted by St Michael & All Angels. Among the guests was the Mayor of Salford, Cllr Bernard Murphy. Salford City Academy was represented by one of their school governors. Other guests were present from the church and local community.

Following this there was a special Pilgrimage Service in church. Bishop Nigel presented the Commonwealth games baton to ten-year-old Grace Stigant, who accepted it on behalf of future generations. Chris Ireland, one of the longest serving members of the church, spoke about the origins of St Michael's. Win Collantine, the church treasurer, gave a talk about the present day
