St Matthew's,Little Lever

On Thursday September 21 2006 Bishop Nigel visited St Matthews, Little Lever as part of the Run the Race Pilgrimage.

The parish visit element of the pilgrimage included a visit to Little Lever High School and 'Jelly Babies' an independent nursery where Bishop Nigel met staff and 'students'. Rev John Wiseman, vicar at St Matthew's explained: "Following that was a visit to Oakwood which offers something in between social care and a hospital, it's for people with difficulties and some in need of drug rehabilitation. The Bishop was thoroughly welcomed and was able to show people the pulse beat of the Commonwealth Games Baton."

The Community Reception took place in St Matthew's School. A wide variety of people from the local community of Little Lever were invited. Among those attending were local councillors, a local GP, members of other local churches, along with members of St Matthew's congregation. Bishop Nigel was able to mingle and chat with guests in an informal atmosphere over refreshments.

The Pilgrimage Service was well attended with many people there from the Community Reception. Val Smiles did a presentation about the history of the Parish. Rev Wiseman added: "The Bishop invited people to receive an anointing. It had a thoroughly ecumenical element, some Roman Catholics came up which was very moving." During the service the Bishop handed the Baton to Church Warden, Jim Barton.

Reflecting upon the Bishop's visit Rev Wiseman said: "People thoroughly enjoyed organising it and

it flowed very well. I think it has strengthened the bond between us as a community, although in Little Lever we are lucky because we are already an urban village, but the visit had a very positive affect."
