St Augustine, Tonge Moor

In the busy run up to Christmas on Tuesday December 12 2006 Bishop Nigel visited St Augustine, Tonge Moor, Bolton as part of his ongoing pilgrimage to all parishes in the Diocese of Manchester.

Incumbent at St Augustine's Rev Tony Davies said: "As part of the parish visit Bishop Nigel came and had a look at the new children's centre which has been built in the parish. He spent quite a lot of time there. He was shown around by the centre manager. It was an evening visit so the Bishop didn't meet any of the children but was able to see the facilities.

Tonge Children's Centre is a drop in centre for mums and children and there are nursery nurses on hand, there is a café and the United Reform Church have a chapel there. Bolton have combined all the children's services together and this a hub of the community."

Following the Parish visit Bishop Nigel attended a Community Reception in St Augustine's Church Hall. Light refreshments were available at the informal gathering and Bishop Nigel was able to chat and mingle with members of St Augustine's congregation. Rev Davies said: "The Bishop managed to speak with most people who were there, as he does."

Rev Davies added: "The next thing was the actual service which went very well and the people their received it well. We followed the suggested outline. The Commonwealth Games Baton was placed on a stand during the service. Bishop Nigel invited those present to come forward for a blessing and anointing and people came forward to receive that."
