St Katharine's, Blackrod

On June 5 2007 Bishop Nigel visited St Katharine's, Blackrod as part of his Run the Race Pilgrimage.

For the parish visit Bishop Nigel was taken to see Mrs Linda Walton at Design Lights Stained Glass Studio. Then he visited members of St Katharine's who are part of a group called Millennium Tapestry.

Members of the local community were invited to a Community Reception. Guests included the Mayor of Blackrod, Councillor Ian Hamilton and the Headteacher of Blackrod Church School, Mr James Royal.

At the pilgrimage service the chair of Blackrod Friends of Chernobyl's children told their story. A local lady, Mrs Barbara Worsley, who was born in Blackrod also spoke during the service. Jonathan Holt, a science student a Manchester University, who has recently been confirmed, talked about his experience at St Katharine's.

During the service those present were encouraged to run the race and look to Jesus. Bishop Nigel invited people to come forward for an anointing and a blessing. At the end of the service the baton was handed back to Bishop Nigel by Mr Gordon Merry, a retired churchwarden who has given 39 years of service to St Katharine's.

Rev Roger Cooper said: "We were delighted to welcome the Bishop to the Parish of St Katharine, Blackrod."

Bishop Nigel also went to the top of St Katharine's Church tower to see views of Manchester, Salford, Cheshire, Derbyshire and distant views of the Lake District and North Wales.
