The Bishop of Manchester visited the parishes of St Chad New Moston and St John Moston on January 31st, 2008 as part of his Run the Race Pilgrimage.
After praying the pilgrimage office with about twenty church members, the bishop called in on Moston's 'Big Stars' - a before and after-school club based at St Chad's. The club is run by church member, Cathy Stryczek and on the day the bishop visited, catered for fifteen children under 11.
The rector, the Revd. Charles Gorton then took the bishop to visit some of his four-legged parishioners at Manchester Dogs' Home, Harpurhey, which is based in St John's parish. Here the bishop met veterinary staff, and those who take care of the animals day by day. Sadly, this being the month after Christmas, the dogs' home was fuller than usual with abandoned and neglected pets.
St John's Church was the venue for the parish's community reception. Mingling with the bishop and church members were the chair of New Moston Resident's Association (NEPHRE), as well as local councillors, Henry Cooper, Pat Carney and Bill Risby. The , Head of MANCAT's Moston Campus, Mr. L Wilde was also able to attend.
After the reception, the pilgrimage service was held at St John's. Louise Edwards, a young mother and practising solicitor as well as a former churchwarden of St John's told her own story of faith and that of the church community at St John's, while Paul Jagger, secondary school teacher, and churchwarden of St Chad's told his own personal story and spoke on behalf of St Chad's.
