Manchester Deaf Church

As part of Bishop's Nigel Pilgrimage around the Diocese, Bishop Nigel invited the Deaf churches in Manchester Diocese to his home at Bishopscourt on July 17, 2010.

About twenty deaf people came to Bishopscourt from Manchester, Trafford, Rawtenstall, Ashton, and Bury.

"It was a lovely, special day", said Brenda Hamlin of Trafford. The Revd. Cathy Nightingale, Diocesan Chaplain among the Deaf Community, added: "Bishop Nigel and his attendants were very pleased to meet us and gave us lovely sandwiches followed by  strawberries and cream."

Along with Revd. Cathy Nightingale, her predecessor as chaplain, Archdeacon Cherry Vann and interpreters, Sue Miles and Ros Hunt were also there.

After the tea party, Bishop Nigel gave a short presentation of his robes, mitre (a bishop's hat), staff (a shepherd's crook) and also his ring.

Those present were then invited to another room where a short service took place. 'Bishop Nigel talked about 'Run the Race' and showed the Commonwealth Games 2002 baton which had a light on it that looked like a cross.' relates Joan Needham of Stretford, 'Bishop Nigel explained that he wanted to reach out to as many people in all churches in the whole of Manchester, pass the baton around.'

Revd. Cathy and Joan Needham led a short service with Bishop Nigel  which included the special blessing of hands by Bishop Nigel. 'It was a lovely and moving feeling' Revd. Cathy Nightingale said, 'the bishop then gave each of us a leaflet and a brooch.'
