St Mary, Moston

The bishop of Manchester spent time with parishioners from 9 (and and under) to 90 (and over) during his Run the Race Pilgrimage Visit to St Mary's Moston on May 20th, 2010, focussing on local schools, a retirement community and leading worship alongside a 90 year-old Reader Emeritus, Harold Greaves.

First, the bishop visited Broadhurst Primary School where he led an assembly, staying on for a question and answer session with children in years 5 and 6. Vicar, the Revd. Matt Calladine said, 'In our community, prety much the only place where people gather in significant numbers daily are in our schools.

'We were delighted that the Bishop was able to visit two of them in his time with us. Broadhurst Primary has come through some very tough times, overcoming the threat of closure and many other challenges.

'The bishop saw for himself the many positive steps taken to turn this school around and was delighted to celebrate the school's achievements with staff and pupils. Years 5 and 6 really looked forward to asking the bishop their questions.'

Bishop Nigel then met residents at Sydney Jones Court retirement community. This was formerly run by the British Legion for ex-service men and women, but has now been taken over by a housing association.

A community cream tea reception was held at St. Mary's Church of England Primary school with a number of guests from the local community attending.

A Service of Recommissioning followed in St Mary's Church. Joe Calladine told the church`s story and  the baton was handed back to the Bishop at end of the service by a youmnger member of the church  - representing the new generation called to pass on 'the faith hope and love' of God into the future.
