The Bishop of Manchester's Pilgrimage visit to St John Mosley Common on May 13th, 2010 was an occasion for celebrating a number of important anniversaries: the 125th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone at St John's; the 25th anniversary of Vicar, the Revd. Julian Hartley's ordination as a priest, and his 10th anniversary as Vicar of St John`s.
To add to the celebrations, it was also Ascension Day - and when the vicar - an accomplished pyrotechnician - has a nickname like "Rev Rocket", festivities are certain to go with a bang.
The Pilgrimage Service (pictured right) began and ended with a spectacular show of indoor fireworks. During the service two young members of the church who had recently run the Sport Relief Mile handed the baton back to the Bishop.
The bishop arrived earlier in the day and after praying with church members, visited local businesses including the Maxilead recycling plant and Country Baskets, a local wholesaler of gifts and floral supplies.
The bishop also visited St John's Mosley Common C.E. Primary School and Children's Centre, where he met head-teacher, Mr W. George, and popped in on the Leylands Living Farm, where he was given a guided tour.
The service followed a reception for the local community, hosted by the church, which gave the bishop an opportunity to meet locals over refreshments.
