St George, Heap Bridge

On April 27 Bishop Nigel visited St George Heap Bridge. The bishop's community reception and pilgrimage service helped put St George's on the map and was the talk of the town at the school gate in the small community for some time afterwards.

Bishop Nigel visited local allotments adjacent to the church and  Wheeldon`s Waste and Recycling centre--a family-run business.

He went on the picking line and recycled some wood and polythene. About 80% of the waste at the site is recycled into another product.

Revd Susan Banks said "Bishop Nigel enjoyed the visit immensely and at the pilgrimage service that evening he commented on how items that are thrown away and seem useless can actually be transformed into new and useful products. Just as we are transformed by the love of God as we go forward carrying the baton of faith, hope and love".

Heap Bridge Primary School choir sang at the service of celebration.

The children enjoyed watching Bishop Nigel's relay race up and down the church aisle. Revd Susan Banks hopes parents felt the warm welcome extended to families by the church.

She said "There was a real buzz about the visit afterwards and it was great to see how comfortable people felt in the service, even though many had not been here before. Lots of people were talking about it afterwards.

"The Bishop's visit also gave a great boost to regular members of the congregation. They felt very special and affirmed."

The church hopes to host a follow-up service in the community and will continue engaging with the primary school by offering assemblies, harvest and Christingle services.
