St Andrew Hillock

The Bishop of Manchester's Run the Race pilgrimage took him to St Andrew's, Hillock, Whitefield on Tuesday 19 January 2010.

Bishop Nigel visited the Ribble Drive Community School and Children's Centre, where he met children and the head teacher.

He also called in on the Shuttle Centre which has an active youth programme.

Guests at the community reception included the Mayor and Mayoress of Bury.

During the service, three members of St Andrew's talked about the past, present and future of the church.

Mrs Jean Worsley, Mrs Gail Gough and Mrs Michele Ryan were chosen to tell their stories as they have been members of the congregation for many years.

They felt the message of passing on the baton of faith to the next generation was very relevant to their parish context. The Bishop reflected on their stories in his own talk.

At the time of the bishop's visit the parish of St Andrew's was in the middle of an interregnum, with no minister in place. Churchwarden Lynne Cross reflected, "We all pulled together as a team and had a very successful day.

"We really appreciated the Bishop's visit, and it brought the community and ministry together. The church family felt the occasion was a very anointed time, and we were pleased it was so well attended."

Churchwarden Mrs Francis Lawson and Joshua Ryan (member of "little fishes" - the Sunday school) handed the baton back to Bishop Nigel to symbolise that all ages have a part to play in proclaiming Jesus.
