Manchester Cathedral

The Bishop of Manchester made two visits to Manchester Cathedral as part of his diocesan pilgrimage, during which the bishop is encouraging clergy and people to 'Run the Race' and to pass on the baton of faith, hope and love.

The bishop's first visit to his cathedral was on Thursday, October 1, 2009. After prayers with members of the cathedral community, the bishop visited the Booth Centre Garden, tended by staff and clients of the Booth Centre, which works with homeless people in the city centre.

The bishop was then shown plans for the future redevelopment of the  Cathedral quarter on a visit to the offices of West Properties. The bishop also visited the headquarters of the Co-operative Group and met Chief Executive, Peter Marks.

The bishop also met staff and shoppers at the Arndale Centre (which lies in the cathedral's city-centre parish) and then was given a bird's-eye view of the cathedral and city from the Manchester Wheel in Exchange Square, from where the bishop took the opportunity to bless the city and its people.

After choral evensong in the cathedral, a community reception was held in the cathedral.

A second visit on Sunday, October 4 gave the bishop an opportunity to meet the cathedral's regular Sunday congregation at the Sung Eucharist, which served as the cathedral's pilgrimage service.

The bishop brought with him the Commonwealth Games baton that has accompanied him throughout his three year journey.
