The Bishop of Manchester visited St Michael and All Angels in Northern Moor on his pilgrimage to parishes on 29 September 2009, Michaelmas Day. Parishioners had decorated the church with Michaelmas daisies of different colours and varieties to welcome Bishop Nigel when he arrived to pray with clergy and wardens in the Lady Chapel. After prayers, the Bishop made three visits in the local community. He met Ken Hunt, one of the longest serving Readers in the diocese, with 60 years' service. They had a good chat about old times and reflected on Ken's remarkable ministry. The bishop then visited Mrs Jean McVeety, one of the oldest members of the church. She can remember the dedication of St Michael's church by the then Bishop of Manchester in 1937. She has been a faithful and hard-working member of the church. The final visit was to the Northenden campus of Manchester College - where the bishop met the chaplain and toured the hairdressing salon, photography studios and learning resources centre. The community reception was well attended by representatives of both Northenden and Brooklands Council, the Mayor of Manchester and Churches Together. Bishop Nigel left a deep impression on everyone gathered for the occasion. During the service, children of Rack-house primary school did a presentation of the common history of school and church. Brownies returned the baton to the bishop.
