On 24 September 2009 Bishop Nigel visited Holy Trinity Littleborough and St James Calderbrook as part of his Run the Race pilgrimage.
At Holy Trinity he met with clergy, the Reader and wardens for prayers. He spent some time talking to parishioner Cathy Mitchell and her mother Marjorie. Cathy was seriously injured in a road traffic accident and attributes her recovery to the power of prayer. She was resuscitated a number of times and many local churches prayed for her.
Vicar John McGrath said, "We were encouraged that Bishop nigel was aware of the needs of Holy Trinity and made time to visit us."
The bishop met pet sheep James and Shadow (James is pictured, unwilling to walk over and say hello). They are Shetland sheep, the oldest breed in Britain.
Arriving at St James, Calderbrook, the bishop was thrilled to see the church porch full of running shoes, ranging from small children's sizes to adult ones, all filled with flower arrangements, reinforcing the message to 'Run the Race'.
There was a wonderful turnout for the Community Reception, to which everyone who had ever done any work on the church building was invited. Members of the lunch club, local shop keepers and the village school were also invited.
Churchwarden Linda Hargreaves said, "It was an absolutely wonderful evening. Calderbrook is renowned for its good food and hospitality. We put on a superb spread with salmon and home-cooked ham, and the bishop was very appreciative.
