St George Dane Bank and Christ Church, Denton

The Bishop of Manchester briefly became a barristo during his pilgrimage visit to St George's Dane Bank and Christ Church Denton.

The bishop's coffee-making talents were put to the test at a visit to Costa Coffee at Crown Point North shopping centre on July 16th 2009.

After prayers at St George's, priest-in-charge, the Revd. Shirley Harrison, took the bishop to Windsor House Residential home, where he met residents and staff. Next stop was the home of Thora West, who had just celebrated her 100th birthday. Thora's late husband, Wally was organist and choirmaster at Christ Church for 50 years.

The bishop returned to Christ Church for the reception where members of the church welcomed a number of guests from the local community, including Andy Williams, organiser of the Denton Carnival.

A service of recommissioning in Christ Church followed the reception. Among those who took part in the service were Muriel and Fred Hutchings.

Muriel, 86, who has worshipped at St George's for over 60 years; recalled services held first in the hat factory, and then later in the "tin hut", before the current St George's was opened. Her husband, Fred, who was 87 on the day of the pilgrimage, returned the baton 'of faith, hope and love' to the bishop at the end of the service.

Priest-in-charge, the Revd. Shirley Harrison spoke of the pilgrimage: "Christ Church was closed for over five years while major structural repairs had to be made, and the congregation has come through some difficult times in recent years.

"We were delighted to be able to celebrate with Bishop Nigel that we are still here - and still worshipping!

"The Bishop's visit was a chance to celebrate the past and embrace the present, but even more importantly it has inspired us for the future."
