St Luke and St Matthew, Halliwell

Bishop Nigel visited the parish of St Luke and St Matthew on 17 March 2009.

He met members of the church council and clergy for prayers at St Matthew`s church before making visits into the community.

He visited St Matthew's primary school and then met staff at the new Sure Start Centre that provides support and healthcare for young families.

There followed a community reception at St Luke`s church, where the Bishop heard about the work of the drop-in centre.

There was an excellent turn-out from the community with local councillors, the MP, GPs, shopkeepers and school governors attending. The bishop mingled with everyone and heard about local issues.

The evening service of celebration and commissioning was held at St Luke`s.

Denise Colgan gave a moving testimony about her journey to faith. She had been through some difficult times during which she came closer to God. The Bishop later wove her story into his sermon.

Members of the church and school were very appreciative of the bishop's visit and felt affirmed in their work and ministry.

Team Rector, Stuart Cormes, said "The bishop's visit has helped our relationships with local shopkeepers. Some were not in favour of the drop-in centre in the town, but as a result of getting to know one another better their support for the work we are
