The Bishop Manchester's pilgrimage visit to St Luke's Deeplish on Friday 20th February 2009 included a live interview about inter-faith relations on Rochdale's Crescent Community Radio drive-time show.
After praying with a small group of worshippers at St Luke's, the bishop also visited Leyton House Nursing Home, Milkstone Road, Rochdale and popped in to Fitness First, a local gym at Sambrook Park.
After his interview at Crescent Radio, the bishop returned to St Lukes for a reception, hosted by the church and attended by a number of leading members of the local community including the Mayor & Mayoress of Rochdale, Councillor Angela Coric, and a local Imam, recently awarded an OBE for his services to community life.
Vicar of St Luke's, Canon John Magumba, said "The Bishop's visit provided a much needed opportunity to invite people from our parish community. We want to work together with our local community - our hope is that this occasion will kick start dialogue with our neighbours and encourage further events to help build up good relationships.'
After the reception, a pilgrimage service took place at St Lukes.
The story of the church and its local community was told by a small group of church members ranging from Lyn Isherwood, a lifetime member of congregation for more than fifty years; Tony Ashton, Reader at St Luke's; Amy Clift, a member of the church for her entire eighteen years to recent addition to the congregation, Addy Akinade.
'We see the bishop's pilgrimage as just one of what we hope will be increasing number of opportunities for us to talk about our faith more openly.' continued Canon Magumba.
