As the Run the Race Pilgrimage reached St John's, Brooklands, the Bishop of Manchester dedicated a new chapel as part of the church's anniversary celebrations.
On St Luke's Day, 17th October 2008, the Bishop of Manchester arrived at St John's church. His visit began with the Pilgrimage Office which was said in the church before they visited the local Tesco store. Bishop Nigel was warmly welcomed and spent time chatting with the senior management team before exploring the aisles where he met other staff and shoppers.
The bishop next went to visit the home of Enez Hurlock who regularly receives home communion as part of St John's extended church community. Enez was delighted to offer the bishop her hospitality and they happily chatted for half an hour.
Bishop Nigel's visit coincided with the 140 year anniversary of St John's and he was able to explore the history of the church with congregation members, thanks to the church history timeline exhibition in the church hall. Earlier in the year, a community party celebrating the church's anniversary had attracted over 500 people, so it was no surprise that over 230 people attended the community reception in the church hall.
The local community was very well represented at the reception by local councillors from both the Trafford and Manchester wards, the local police inspector together with the local GPs and funeral directors. A large number of uniformed groups were also welcomed and included local brownie, guide, cub and scout groups.
The Run the Race service was combined with the dedication of the Trinity Chapel at St John's to commemorate the 140th anniversary
