The Bishop of Manchester got into the rhythm of his pilgrimage by 'drumming the race' on a drum kit in St. Hugh's school hall during his visit on October 2nd 2008.
St. Hugh's primary school was the first stop for the bishop during his pilgrimage to Leesfield. The congregation of St. Hugh's meet for worship in the school hall, and many church members are parents or pupils at the school. Bishop Nigel met with all of the school staff and was introduced to Ivy Brown, former Church Warden of St. Hugh's, who had lived in the community since the 1960s. He then visited Marian in her home across from the school, who had also served as Church Warden for many years, and was delighted to meet the bishop.
The pilgrimage then continued at St. Agnes' primary school where the bishop met with staff and pupils He then moved to St. Agnes' church building and was joined by a local family and the Head and Deputy Head of St. Agnes' school to say the Pilgrimage Office together.
For the last leg of this pilgrimage, Father Vaughan Leonard had invited community representatives from local shops and businesses to the Run the Race reception, and many of these also attended the evening service in St. Thomas's church afterwards. During the service, Church Secretary Judith Knott and daughter Ellie gave a presentation on the local community of Leesfield, and praised Fr. Vaughan's work in the church and community.
Bishop Nigel was greeted with cheers as he set off on a relay race around the church with the pilgrimage baton, which curate, Revd. Denise Luke, described as 'one of the highlights of the service.'
