St Agnes Longsight

The bishop of Manchester visited the parish of St Agnes Longsight, on Monday 16th June 2008

After praying with members of the church to begin his visit, the bishop  walked to the building site of the new St Agnes School. Donning hard hat and boots the Bishop was given a brief tour of the £6.5 million innovative building, made from a wooden frame - the first of its kind in Britain.

The reception was attended by nearly ninety guests from a wide section of the local community.

During the Pilgrimage Service, the story of St Agnes past, present and future was told using visual images presented on a screen and three voices, representing the diversity of the congregation of St Agnes.  The Bishop blessed a new altar frontal made by the children of St Agnes Junior Church and destined for the children's altar in Manchester Cathedral later this summer.

Rita Bowlay Williams, who has been a server at St Agnes for many years and is currently sitting her GCSEs handed back the Commonwealth Games baton that has accompanied the bishop throughout his pilgrimage.

Revd Stephen Edwards, Parish Priest of St Agnes, Longsight, said, 'Preparing for this event has really excited the congregation - we have enjoyed sharing our thoughts, feelings and experiences of St Agnes. It has been encouraging to see just how many links, partnerships and contacts we have with our local community both as individuals and as a church.'

'The Bishop's visit was a wonderful opportunity for the people of St Agnes to share our parish life and ministry with our Bishop. It was such an encouraging event which has given us a great start to the launch
