The Bishop of Manchester, the Right Revd. Nigel McCulloch visited Bury Football Club during his pilgrimage to St Peter's, Bury on June 10, 2008 and discovered that the club already has a 'Bishop' of its own.
On his first ever visit to a football league club during his two-year pilgrimage, Bishop Nigel was allowed on to the pitch and presented with a Bury FC shirt. He learned about the club's work in the local community including a link with St Peter's and the Mother's Union.
The bishop also visited St Luke's Primary School Foundation unit, to meet the after school club and to listen to the school choir. He then popped in to Bankfield Residential Home to meet residents including St Peter's oldest parishioner, Mary Wigglesworth who celebrated her 100th birthday on July 4th 2008.
At a community reception, organised by the church council the bishop met members of the local community including members of Bury Christian / Muslim Interfaith Forum and Ian Duxbury, Chair of Fishpool Tenants Residents Association
The Pilgrimage Service included a series of short reflections from adults and children about the life of the church in the past but emphasising how the church tries to serve community today.
The Commonwealth Games baton was received by Geoff Preston, who celebrates 50 years as a Reader later this year. At the end of the service two of St Peter's youngest confirmation candidates, David Rimmer (13) and Mark Nealon (15) returned the baton to Bishop Nigel.
Priest-in-charge, the Revd. John O'Dwyer said: 'We were delighted that Bishop Nigel's visit allowed us to share with him something of the work we do in partnership in our diverse community and have been greatly encouraged through his time
