St John with St Mark, Bury

The Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Revd. Nigel McCulloch got physical down at the gym when he visited St John with St Mark Bury, on Friday 18th April, 2008.

After praying with a dozen or so churchmembers in church, the bishop visited Bury Fire Station, where he met fire crews and had a tour of the station including having a go on the exercise machines in the firefighter's own gym (followed by a rather less energetic cup of tea).

A visit to Chestnut Court Residential Home coincided with the residents' evening meal, so the bishop sat at table with diners, before visiting the more infirm in their own rooms.

Guests at the community reception in the church hall included the Mayor of Bury and Mr David Chaytor MP. A  children's choir from St John with St Mark's Primary School sang during the reception, while the bishop conversed with guests including staff from the Fire Service and Chestnut Court as well as representatives of the Noor ul Islam Mosque, who have good relationships with the church.

Many of those present stayed for the Pilgrimage Service in church during which Darren Dunn, a young dad whose family joined the church in the last few years, and Archie Wardle, a longstanding member, spoke about their faith and the life of the church.

The music was led by a choir of teaching staff from the Church Primary School, together with the   church's own choir and organist and some musicians from the neighbouring parish of Christ Church Walmersley.

At the end of the service, former Churchwarden and longstanding member of the church, John Rawson, returned the Commonwealth Games baton to the bishop.

The Revd. Ian Stamp, priest-in-charge, said 'It was great to share with the bishop some of the energy and life of this parish in a part of Bury with people of very diverse cultural and faith heritage. We were also delighted to discover how many committed Anglicans serve in our local fire station!

'So many people stayed for the service, and we were especially pleased that friends from St Joseph's RC church joined us. It was a joyful service with lots of music and a great deal of involvement by lots of people. Almost everyone came forward to be anointed and many said how moved they had been by the experience.'
