The Bishop of Manchester, the Rt Revd. Nigel McCulloch visited the parish of Christ Church Moss Side on Tuesday 11th March, 2008, spending a substantial part of his visit with staff and students of Manchester Academy.
After praying with clergy and parishioners at Christ Church, the bishop met Manchester Academy's Principal, Mrs. Kathy August, and enjoyed a presentation from a group of students about their recent award-winning 'River Medlock Waterwheel' design project. The bishop also visited a comprehensive range of after-school activities for the inner city school including a dance class and a basketball practice session.
Vicar of Christ Church, Canon Simon Killwick said: "Manchester Academy is a really good news story coming out of Moss Side. The academy is the major local institution that we have links with as a parish; and it is also a major engine for regeneration in Moss Side, vastly improving the educational opportunities available to local children."
At a community reception at Christ Church, guests included former Lord Mayor of Manchester, local community leader and lay canon of Manchester Cathedral, Cllr. Roy Walters, and Cllr. Alastair Cox.
Handing back the Commonwealth Games baton to the bishop was community activist and former local councillor, Mrs Locita Brandy, also Mothers' Union branch-leader at Christ Church.
